The ABC's of Crime and Punishment in Puritan New England is a cute little book about Donna B Gawel’s great-grandparents and others that arrived on the Mayflower in 1620. The author uses the alphabet from A to Z to title each section that she will discuss. She also explains how various terms or words originated. Her descriptions of some of the crimes that one committed in those days can often be hilarious. Whatever our opinions of the crimes the punishments could be brutal and almost torture in some cases. It’s interesting that the pilgrims came to the Americas to obtain freedom to practice their religion, but they booked no dissent about how the religion should be practiced. I enjoyed reading about crime and punishment during the Puritan era. Anyone interested in the Puritan era would probably like this book.
